Tangiers And Harshness

Recommended Posts

Based off of the awesome recommendations from this forum I decided to obtain my first order of Tangiers in December: Kashmir Peach and Cherry. I followed the tips provided on the board and made sure to allow time for both to properly acclimate until they obtained a normal smell and seemed ready to go. I also ensured that it was properly packed into my small Tangiers phunnel bowl. I noticed that there was a lot of inconsistency with the tobacco. Were the clouds awesome? Yes. Taste awesome? Yes. The only problem though was that the majority of the bowls got unbearably harsh far too quickly.

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before, but if anyone could help me with this it would be greatly appreciated as I don't want to give up on this brand after hearing so many good things!

My setup is a Mya QT, Small Tangiers Phunnel Bowl, and Coco Naras. Thanks! Edited by alexforbreakfast

what did you do for heat management. coals how many etc?

On everything that isn't Tangiers I usually use 3 Coco Nara coals to start off the session, and then when they die down I add two more to the remains of the worn down coals. With Tangiers I've tried 2 and 3 coals, but both have been giving somewhat similar results. Is there any chance that I may have just gotten a bad bach? And how many coals would you suggest for Tangiers with a small phunnel? Thanks. Edited by alexforbreakfast

Yeah its tricky I used 2 cococ, my first time and it was too much. prob is when I used 1 there wasn't enough smoke.

Very tricky.
Now I use Jap coals, and its fine I use 4 pieces 2x2 stuck together riding the edges of the bowl.

Do you have a windcover? use 1 coco and a cover to get it going, then 15-20mins later take off the cover and add another coal. See if that works out for you, I have a small funnel and usually I get good clouds and flavor from 2 coco's, I use 2 coco's and a cover for the first 5 mins, I usually don't take a hit in that period, so after a few mins I remove the cover and it's good from there. I add the cover back when the coals begin to diminish. GL and keep us updated.

I do not have a windcover, but maybe it'd be a good time to invest in one. I'll give the 2 coals with the cover waiting five minutes thing a go and see how that works after I get my next order in and let you know how it goes. Thanks to everyone that responded.

Take a steak knife and CAREFULLY saw two Cocos in half (once you get about half way, knock the knife with something heavy and it will crack in half). Use 3 halves and prepare for the best session ever.

My rule of thumb for Tangiers is:

1. Overpack the stuff, OG or Lucid.
2. Start with 1 coal and go from there. DON'T put 3+ coals on the bowl and expect it to smoke good. Heat it up slooooowly or you'll burn the surface.

I'm also having the problem of the smoke being too harsh/bad flavor.

I just phoned Eric, and this is what I got:
(I'm using a medium phunnel btw)

1) Pack the bowl quite full and tight.
2) (I use 33mm 3K QL) Break 1 QL into 4 quarters. Use 3 quarters to start with.
3) Only add more coal later if the flavor is coming through good.

I'm gonna try his tips, see how it goes.

Interesting.... I forget how much I used on my first bowl; I just acclimated some guava (and my god was it hard to NOT smoke it while the aroma filled the entire HOUSE), so when I light that up tomorrow, I will see how little I can get away with.

I have the best sessions using Hookah John's hookah quicklites while smoking tangiers. I start with 2 coals smoke them till they go out then add 2 more about 45min - 1hr later. This method let's me experience about a 2hr session with great flavor and no harshness now it took me awhile to get the packing method down but I really been getting it right since about thanksgiving. The best tips I ever got about tangiers is over pack it and poke your holes all the way through the tobacco using two outside rings and a hole over the middle.

Edit:removed an NHT reference

Ya might wanna edit that 'C' word out of there.. Or tell the mods you made a boo-boo. NHT reference and all.

I should try some of John's quicklights next time I do Tangiers. I haven't tried them with Tang yet. Edited by JDHarding

Trying John's QLs today with my bad batch of Tang Lucid Blue Gumball. Well, not bad, just smelly. Flavor's fine.

These quicklights do make the flavor better. This time I packed the shisha down into the phunnel bowl, and kept enough room between the shisha and the foil so they wouldn't touch. 2 rings of holes around the outside.

It will MURDER YOUR FACE!! As someones been saying biggrin.gif

For coco's on my medium bowl I've had success two ways:

I bust em into halves, and use 3 halves to start, slowly adding a half piece if needed every TEN minutes...which is a long time to an impatient guy like myself.

OR

I add one coco, I really don't even smoke it (these are hanging off the edges).

5 minutes I'll add another

a full TEN minutes I'll add another coco

So after 20 minutes, its now tasty, and smokes great.
